Where can I buy malted brown bread?

Where can I buy malted brown bread? You know, the sort they use on M&S pre-packed sandwiches. Also Ginsters etc.

No matter what brown bread I buy it never tastes as nice as the malted stuff they use on ready made sandwiches.

Anyone know where you can buy it? I can't seem to find it anywhere!

I don't normally shop there, but I'll give it a try and see what it's like.

Can anyone actually recommend a loaf from personal experience that is just like the bread used on pre-packed sandwiches?

Malted bread is sold under various trade names - granary and harvester are the two that I can think of off the top of my head. Each big miller makes a 'granary' type flour (white flour, malt and some malted whole grains) but they all have to call it something different because Rank-Hovis nabbed 'granary' first. Most supermarkets sell a malted grain loaf, or you can pick up granary fairly easily.

That's the thing I've tried various "granary" type loaves and none of them ever taste as nice. That Tesco one is the only one I've seen actually sold as "malted".

My missus says she's looked in Tesco many times and they never actually have any. I will try my local Tesco on the way home from work tomorrow and see how I get on :cool:

If you have a breadmaker you can buy malt (its like treacle) in holland and barrett make your own.

Also try Kingsmill Tasty Wholemeal, it is slightly different to pre-pack sandwich bread but does have a really nice flavour and I think that is due to malt.

Thanks. Yes I've tried the Hovis and it was just like normal brown bread.
