You're already paying for A-E so shouldn't be included in calculations for business travel, if they are then it should be only the extra depreciation from the extra miles for business.

So really, you've proved my point, the average cost of running a car for business mileage is between 23 and 38p, thus lower than the recommended 45ppm

Using a personal vehicle for business use requires recompense beyond "to cover the petrol".

The allowance recognises wear and tear, additional expense which may be incurred through business insurance not to mention depreciation and it lets them off the hook providing and maintaining a fleet of pool cars.

    I wouldn't use my car at .45ppm.

Absolutely not to expect to provide your car at 0.45p per mile but the rate is generally 45p per mile.
  • I'm also wondering about this. I work for an NHS trust as a community midwife. I attend the hospital for mandatory training sessions twice a year. The cost of parking all day at the hospital is £8, with no viable alternative. We are not allowed to reclaim the cost of the parking, or claim our usual rate of mileage. How is this possible when training is mandatory??

Is the hospital considered to be your 'base' ?

In such a situation it would make perfect sense.
  • No hospital is not our base, we are based in community and can claim parking and travel costs for all other visits etc.

Perhaps I'm not being clear. You are employed by the trust, and when you joined, you were assigned a 'homebase', if that is the hospital; It's perfectly reasonable for the times when you are there to be covered by you. Just like anyone else travelling to and from work.

When you are on visits, you are travelling for work, not to or from, and that is why you are recompensed.
  • Yes we are employed by the trust but the hospital is not our base. My base is stated as community office on payslip so I assume that's what my base is! we have a community office and clinic and only travel to the hospital if required for training or to attend with Women

Indeed, so you are travelling away from your 'base', next step is check your policy about expenses and highlight this to your manager.

we are no longer able to claim mileage etc for study days (also a community midwife) - apparently it's because the hospital staff can't even if they go to a different area and our contracts state that we can be sent to work anywhere within the trust
