Look online for table d'hote and a la carte table layouts. I did this 10 years ago but cant remember now. Table d'hote is a set menu offering an entire meal at a fixed price and the table layout uses all cutlery and side plates. A la carte is a menu where the customer orders separate items and is a basic table layout, so if they ordered soup you would need to take them a soup spoon. By having a knowledge of this it will show the interviewer you have taken initiative in gaining an understanding without experience.

At my place they always ask the waiter/waitresses a question like this... Answer this. You have taken an order from a customer for a caesar salad, who is a celiac and asked for croutons to be left off, when you go to collect the food from the kitchen you notice the chef has put croutons on the salad. How do you deal with this situation?

Probably very generic questions. You say its your first interview, so I assume you haven't had a job before? They're probably going to ask about customer service, rather than 'tell me about a time you gave great customer service,' they might say 'tell me of a time that you received great customer service.' They could ask things like 'tell me of a time you use your own initiative.' If they ask something about food safety/hygiene the keyword is 'cleanliness.' There's also a good chance they'll ask about upselling, so if they ask if someone orders a lasagne with salad, and a glass of pinot, how would you upsell. A good answer is 'I recommend a side order of garlic cheese bread with that, and perhaps you would prefer a bottle to a glass?'

The main thing is to go well presented. Wear at least black trousers/skirt and a white blouse, black shoes (no killer heels!), if your going to wear make up make it 'natural' (make up is a no-no in catering as is perfume.) Make sure your nails are neat and tidy too (I'd also recommend no false nails or polish as these aren't allowed in catering either.)

    Good luck!
