Employeer asking to do different job.

Hello People.
I currently work for a company on a full time permanent contract doing a specific job. Recently the company has treated me quite badly and my current manager is useless.
In the same company and department we have an "assistant" job who helps with various aspects of my job and our department.
The "assistant" has a separate job title, contract and salary than mine.
The assistant has asked to have some experience to my position, so when a vacancy comes up she can apply for it. I dont have an issue with this as there's quite alot of movement in the company as they treat people quite bad. She'd even be quite good at it.
My issue is my boss has asked to me to do her job on days every so often so it free's her up to get the experience with a trainer.
Im against this for a few reasons, firstly I feel if I agree to it once, they will start doing it quite often.
Secondly its the most boring mind numbing job in the world.
Thirdly as the company treat me badly I dont see why I should do them any favours at all.
My contract I believe states "other duties as required" alas it doesnt say I have to do a completely different job role.
Id like some advice before going to my boss about it.
Many thanks in advanced

I can understand how you would feel, but my advice would be that if she was wanting to learn your position then surely you would be the most experienced person to assist with that. I'd try speaking to your boss to explain how you would not mind her shadowing you to gain an understanding of your role, and that it would then not leave you with any time to backfill her position.0

thanks for the reply.
Alas she cant shadow me it has to be the "office trainer"
We would essentially swap roles for the day, and the office trainer would supervise her.0 -
Now that does sound rather deceptive. I would ask how long the arrangement is for.
The interesting part I would ask is if you would get training for her role. Would the office trainer be able to split themselves in two? ;-)0 -
I dont need training in her role, as she assist's my role.
the other issue with that is the company will then give me some pointless training on her job which I dont need.0 -
You are being asked to cover some of your assistant's tasks so that she can receive training for a higher role. I don't see the problem, unless you feel that you are being asked to cover for your own replacement. If there are tasks that you don't like, deal with it. Lots of people have some mind-numbing tasks in their role.
Perhaps your willingness to help might improve relations with your bosses. You could suggest a limitation on the times it happens, so it doesn't impact on your own role. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

Personally I would feel quite aggrieved. If I was in your position and they were arranging for my assistant to learn my job, from somebody else!, I'd think I was being pushed out.
It's one thing to cover during holidays etc but in that case, it's up to you to train your own assistant. Seems odd.0 -
If you don't like it, leave and work somewhere else. I assume you do get paid.0

Did you need any help on your way to where you are now?0
