Advice needed on handing in notice at work... Please help

I couldn't fit it all in the title, basically I've been offered a new job, and in my current job I only need to give a weeks notice, I won't be able to start my new job until my crb check is done and my references etc, so it can be about 3 weeks yet. I wasn't going to tell work until I hand in my notice which will be about 2 weeks time, but my new job need a reference and I need to give them the details within 3 days time... This means my manager will know I've got a new job which I'm scared about as I've only been working there since November... So I feel guilty... Any advice?

There's no way round it. You need a reference so the referee has to know!

There are times in life where you just need to man/woman up and get on with it, this is one of those times. Sit down with your boss, explain the situation, thank them for the employment and you wish them the very best (usual stuff).

    And congratulations!
  • I'd tell them that they might be getting a reference request but don't hand your notice in until you have an unconditional offer.

    I agree with the above.

Also, if/when you speak to your boss do not feel pressured to hand in your notice or put anything in writing.

One that is no longer "subject to references / crb". In other words once those have been done to the new employer's satisfaction.
  • Yep don't be hasty when I started my current job I had the interview in December and was accepted subject to references, enhanced crb etc but because of the time to sort that out I didn't start til April 1st.
So I went yo see the manager told him I was leaving and requested reference but didn't actually hand in my notice until I got a start date.

Your manager will not know that you have got a new job. They will know that you have applied for one - and, when they get the reference request, probably that that organisation is minded to offer you the job (as most organisations don't take up references unless they are at the point of offering a job rather than just interviewing).

When you were interviewed by the new organisation, did you need to take time off work from your current job?
  • Yes, you can just say 'I've applied for a couple but they are just speculative, I don't think I will get them but you never know'.
