I work in retail, if I was caught doing half that stuff I'd be out the door before my feet touched the ground - sorry to say this chief, but you're probably the reason why a lot of people think all people working in finance are jerks!

No. Just smarter and better paid than you.

I'm an admin and I get paid £6.67 per hour. Out of the list I do the following (in bold):

Whilst at work, I expect to be able to:
    - send personal emails, texts, calls I occasionally will send personal emails, and I will text my husband when I want, although I am conscious of doing it too frequently. I hardly ever take personal calls, and if I do, I leave the room and go down the corridor - I hate doing this though
    - deal with personal admin ie pay a bill/look sth up on the internet I won't pay bills or anything but I do occasionally book activities at the leisure centre or google something I'm curious about
    - come in late/leave early for medical apts, plumbers or deliveries I'll only do this if I ask my manager, and it's generally only for blood tests as any other doctors appointments I am able to arrange outside of working hours
    - take the odd bit of stationery for personal use or frank a letter I will only take a pen. I would never frank a personal letter as I feel that's stealing
    - take as many coffee/loo breaks as I want Yes, I do this. I can't concentrate if I need the toilet so I have to. And I will go and make a tea/coffee but always ask other people if they want one, and I come back and drink it at my desk, or if I go to starbucks I do this on my lunch break
    - take more than an hour for lunch if needed I have done once but only because my manager told me I could, but I feel guilty doing it

In return I have been expected to:
    - cancel last min plans with friends to work late (inc missing theatre) I would only do this for a very special circumstance, ie an audit
    - stay late or come in early (unpaid) When needed, yep fine. I always get in work early between 10 - 20 mins so that's the norm
    - not have a lunchbreak when busy I'm able to eat my lunch at my desk so I can and have done this
    - change holiday plans once holiday had been booked I'd never do this
    - answer work emails/calls outside of working hours I'm not paid enough or in a senior position so I will not and have not done this
    - almost always work more than the contracted hours I don't feel that I do, but I would if the business needed me to
