Taking a career break

OP--Have you got a passport?never chew the umbilical cord!!0

I think quite a bit depends on your job - and where you plan to go and what you will do. For instance will you be anywhere long enough to develop language skills and would they actually be used back in the job? Would enhanced cultural awareness be useful for customer relationships? Is your role one where ideas you bring back would be adopted by the company? Will you be taking any jobs as you travel, charity fundraising or mainly lounging on beaches? But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I've tried to search the internet for career break advice but can't find any.
Has anyone taken a career break before and they have a sample letter that they have sent to their employer? I'm struggling what to write.
Here's what I have come up with so far...
I've stated the date then...
The reason I wish to do this to travel abroad for personal development. My aim is to travel around the world and visit as many countries as I can. I believe I will learn a lot about each place I visit and take something forward with me. I want to learn more about the places I travel to as I have never travelled previously.
I believe this would be a benefit to my employment and personal life. I have enjoyed the start to my career and look forward to coming back to continue afterwards.
Hope you can come up with something additional for me.
Thank you! :j
How long have you worked there?
How long are you planning to have off.
What traveling have you done already.
Does your job involve traveling or working internationally.
What's weak with the write up is it is too broad and sound like a gap year jolly.
Lots of places and learning a lot about each is not compatible
You need time in places so fewer places if the primary benefit is learning the cultures.
You might need to focus on a region.0 -
The OP's original letter is terribly written! Sounds like something an 11 year old would write!
However I am very jealous! How long are you going for and where are you going?
I strongly question whether you will want to go back to your old job. I went travelling for 18 months from 2009 to 2011 and it completely changed my perspective on life, working and what I wanted out of it.0 -

I've been employed for just over 2 years.fufu_banterwaite wrote: »The OP's original letter is terribly written! Sounds like something an 11 year old would write!

I wouldn't quite say my OP was a letter... it was a few ideas written down :rotfl:
I am planning on going travelling for a year and I'm not sure yet, wherever it takes me I guess! I will be planning all of that soon.
I hear the same from a lot of people about travelling and how it changed their lives! I'm also applying to transfer to another country to do my job so fingers crossed!0 -
Good for you! When do you go? Do you have no idea of where you may want to visit?Savedotmoney wrote: »I've been employed for just over 2 years.

I've requested my career break at the end of April 2015. Where's it takes me to be honest! There's so many places to visit. I can't wait.
Definitely Australia, Asia, India and America. I have to think about how expensive it will be though and travel as cheap as possible!0 -
A career break after 2/3 years in the job?
Where do you work? I want a job.All that glitters is not gold.0 -
I did have a collegue who had a career break but this was poss 10 years ago.
She had left to work part time for a charity.
This person was an exemplary employee and I imagine that the company was happy to have her back but I don't think she came back on the same pay grade (but this may have been with her agreement).
Savedotmoney - what terms have you negotiated about your return to employment with this company ie date, pay, job role etc?
If they have agreed a career break with the info you have provided then just reiterate this in the written confirmation.
What type of work do you do?
Could there be any cultural, linguistic other development that would benefit the company (and youself)0
