mother of the bride

I know its mainly brides on here but could use some help with ideas re mother of the bride outfit.
My daughter having a traditional wedding (white dress etc) in a civil ceremony. Quite small, 50 guests plus another 20 or so in the evening.
When her brother got married ten years ago I had quite an expensive outfit - it was Frank Usher, and this time around I started to look - just online- at some of the lovely Condici outfits. Then I came to my senses really, they are very expensive and the wedding is fairly modest - I barely know the bridegroom's parents as they are in Ireland, but I know they don't have money to splash. So I thought a dress from Reiss (at most) or, more likely Oasis or Monsoon. The attraction of the expensive outfits, I think is that you don't have to match stuff, its all done for you, but I never wore the outfit I bought to my sons wedding again, so have come to my senses really this time. Am wondering about a hat, they are not too expensive in M&S etc. Fascinators on bands just don't suit me - the alternative, which is alright, is a just some hair decoration on a comb - again there are some fairly elegant ones.
The wedding is in August, so should get away with just a dress and a decent pair of heels without the need for a jacket.
Am 67 but luckily don't look it and am quite slim....
Would love to know what kind of ideas your mums have come up with. I suppose I need to look a little bit different from just another wedding guest, but don't know quite how to achieve it.
Do mums have corsages these days, would only want one if it enhances the dress. One thing I will do, which I found made a great deal of difference when my son got married, is have makeup done.
Thanks for any advice!

Hi, my mum just got her outfit from a place called "just last season" they are online too http://www.justlastseason.co.uk/ She got a jaques vert dress she got with matching balero, shoes and hat. She couldn't find the handbag but got a match at a local market, she is having a corsage type thing attached to her handbag so it's not too fussy around her wrist.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi,

For my sisters wedding my mum had a dress made, it actually worked out cheaper than buying a dress & it was made exactly to her style, size & shape, she also had a bag & fascinator made. She plans to do the same for mine.

If you would like your shoes to match your dress there are company's who specialise in dying them & bags to match.

Wrist coursage, handbag coursage or button hole are all lovely options if you would like flowers.

Have you thought about hiring a hat? I'm sure it would work out cheaper & if you are unlikely to wear it again it might be a good option...

As long as you feel happy in what your wearing :-)

Have you thought about contacting mother of the groom to see what she is thinking, hat no hat etc, it might be a nice way of getting to know her xxx
  • For both my sisters' weddings, my mum booked a personal shopper appointment at John Lewis. They brought her loads of lovely dresses and shoes, bags, hair accessories etc to match and she looked brilliant. I think she still has one of the dresses and a couple of other bits (specifically a little furry jacket) and has worn them again since, so they were a good investment for her.

My mum is quite a trendy fashionable type (well I think she is!) so she wasn't keen on the more 'traditional' mother of the bride outfits - but if that's what you want to wear than fair enough. If you don't think you're going to wear the outfit again could you sell it on eBay perhaps?

Re: corsages, my mum had a corsage (buttonhole style) for both my sisters' weddings and will have one for mine if she wants - but again that's up to you if you want one.

Debenhams also offer a personal dresser service I have used it in 2 stores and it's always been very good service and I have loved the outfits they have picked.

My mum wore Jacques Vert to my wedding managed to get her outfit in the House of Fraser sale and got the whole lot including the hat for less than the original price of the dress.

My mum and MIL both had corsarges that matched my bouquet and the men's button holes. They were held on with a magnet device rather than a pin to protect their outfits

I'm sure you have - but do make sure you double check with your daughter what SHE wants you wearing. My mother planned her 'outfit' and it doesn't fit with the theme of the wedding at all (she was going for a very traditional outfit, because I'd told her we were having a traditional wedding - whereas my idea of 'traditional' meant being in church with our friends just having a great time, and her idea of 'traditional' meant a large hat)
Officially saved enough to cover the cost of our wedding! :A

I'd be interested in hearing others views about this too.

Click on the model wearing the dress on the left, it looks much nicer on.

+1 for Phase Eight, also have a look at the Outlet part of https://www.hobbs.co.uk - even better if you can get to one of their (outlet) shops to try before you buy. For our daughter's wedding this May, wife visited many shops but bought from Hobbs - but we should have waited until closer to the time for the sale and outlet prices, would have saved me a fortune - especially as she's lost about 12Lbs since buying so now one dress needs altering, and the other is 1 size too big but to alter it would be too much money!
  • I can't help with an outfit but my own mum is the same age as you and if she put half as much thought into her outfit as you have, I would be a happy daughter :-)
  • have you tried roman originals they have some lovely dresses and are online
