Random phone call about my pension?

  • Interesting, 01772 is a Salisbury phone code with a well known financial products company with offices in the city...
I also presume there are a number of folk in the same city unconnected or previously employed by the large company, experienced in both pension sales and telemarketing...

They said they were the Pension Review Bureau and it is a new government thing to get people reviewing their pensions.

That is your first indication of a fraud. Whenever a cold call says it has something to do with the Government then you know its a scam. The Govt has no such scheme, incentive or any involvement in this area.

    a
nd said they would send a courier round to pick up pension paperwork

And that is the other indicator as the scams and dodgy schemes or seem to use couriers. Probably as they need to act quickly to get you stitched up before you realise what is going on.

Sounds like an opportunity to clear out some old rubbish to hand to the courier when he calls.

My parents didn't register on TPS as they thought that, saying it kept people in jobs and didn't mind just answering the phone to them!

I admire your parents' kind intentions but the TPS is aimed at legitimate marketing companies. These guys are parasites who's only ultimate intention is to make people poorer in order to enrich themselves.

They serve no useful economic purpose whatsoever.
  • Please report to the Information Commissioner. He has the power to prosecute and to fine. He does, there are numerous examples of this on his website.

But he needs the general public to report - there is a very simple form on his website asking for the offending telephone number or the name of company and 'how distressed' you were.

  • Just telephoned Information Commissioner who confirmed this is a scam and to totally ignore these sort of calls. I said I have tried but they constantly keep ringing.

You can also try to alert the police by reporting any calls like this to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

A cold caller might initially introduce themselves with a false company name, so as well as getting the phone number, try to get the company's registered name (they will usually give this to you if they don't think that you're on to them) so that Action Fraud can find the people they need to investigate. For instance, the Pension Review Bureau doesn't seem to exist as a company, but it looks like they might have something to do with OTT Technology Ltd, who are registered to the same address and also offer pension reviews and transfers.

Even the most insubstantial report could end up helping someone else further down the line.

The FCA issued a further alert on this just today:
