Recylce fluorescent bulbs ?

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question so please feel free to move if necessary.
Does anyone know how to dispose of old fluroescent bulbs safely, including the long-life bulbs now used in household lamps etc ?
I've contacted local council recycle team who basically didn't know and I've searched online, but sites I've found are geared towards industry and not the end consumer. Don't want to throw these things in the bin as they are so toxic.
I'm not looking for anything for them but at the same time don't particulary want to shell out to dispose of them - that being said I would spring for reasonable postage cost.
Going green and recycling is proving difficult but determined to do it ! Managed evertyhing so far and don't want to be beaten on this !
Any advice gladly received.
thanks,
Andy

Our local Ikea has a recycling point for compact fluorescent bulbs, not much good if you are not near one though. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

There were some new regulations that came into effect on 1st July - WEEE which govern the disposal of electronic/electrical waste, making manufacturers and retailers responsible for taking back and recycling the waste although I'm not sure whether low energy bulbs fall under this.
There's a PDF explaining the implications for householders:
