I found this out by accident. On friday opened a bottle of 19p cola (used for a mixer)and then got invited out for a meal on saturday so did not have any more.

On tuesday said to hubby want some cola with you tea. Ok. Poured it out and was still really fizzy.

Only reason I can see is that I laid it on its side in the fridge rather than putting it in the door.

I hate waste it. So maybe a few drinkies tomorrow night.

Yes I know it rots my teeth. But I only drink twice a week.

Enjoy.

My SIL puts a teaspoon in champers/sparkling wine to keep it fizzy for the next night (it's OK, they've usually had a lot more than the one bottle) She swears by it, but as I don't really do champers, can't put hand on heart and say it works. However, MIL agrees with SIL.

Don't usually do fizzy drinks etc (except as mixers and then only at Xmas) but I can't see how laying it on it's side would help. Maybe you just got lucky?

Or maybe it's cos it had only been opened the once ;)

Back in the days I had a diet coke addiction (don't do fizzy's anymore!) I used to find the more you opened the bottle to pour a glass, the flatter it got, till that last pint or so was virtually undrinkable.

But ... if you have any flat coke left over then pur it down the loo and leave overnight to get rid of limescale and deodorize :D

well i'm not sure why this particular bottle didn't go flat but i know of people that swear by squeezing the bottle and the excess air out before putting the cap back on each time. you wind up with a wonky looking bottle in the fridge but they say it works

i've always found that keeping it very cold and only opening when necessary helps...

You can get these little gadgets called 'Fizz keepers' that replace the bottle top. You then pump in air to replace the liquid that has been used...like a reverse vaccume.
These really do work....we have a couple.

You might be right it is due to the it being open once. Well twice now.

So I will find out later tonight.

I don't understand why it would make any difference.

But then I don't tend to take any notice normally how long it stays fizzy for.

It might well go down the toilet later :D

A chemical process takes place every time you open the bottle whereby oxygen enters and reacts with the carbon dioxide inside the bottle. Don't ask me to give you the proper chemical equation right now though as my brain is completely mush today and I'm going to crawl back under the duvet :o

I have also used the 'fizzkeepers' and they are quite good but can only be used in plastic bottles!

Sorry I meant I didn't understand why lying it on it is side why it should stay fizzy.

Not why keep opening it would make any difference.

But it could be a bit of both.

yer i use fizz-keepers too there ggggrrrrreeeaaatttt !!

I think drinks lose their fizz as the carbon dioxide leaves the beverage. More of this gas can be stored in the drink at lower temperatures and higher pressures, this is why when you buy coke for example the bottle is pressurised, the squezzy things help restore a high pressure in the bottle so carbon dioxide will remain absorbed, but obviously the pressure from this will not be as high as from a factory and so will not keep fizz as long!
