You criticized me for trying to help the confidence of my commis and you lack confidence yourself. Still i wont hold it against you and give you some advice on what i look out for when interviewing..

To be fair, its not quite the same thing, having confidence in your employees is rather different to having confidence in your own abilities.

I am, by nature, a fairly introverted person and quite self critical.

I do thank you for your comments though (did the "baccy" guy get the job? lol) and everyone elses too. Much appreciated. :D

Just reading though all this again - because of course I will probably need to employ these tips tomorrow and Friday for my ¨informal chats¨ regarding jobs - and I suddenly have another job interview for next Tuesday.

Blimey. Bit scary. Wish me luck! Many thanks everyone for your advice.

melysion - remember to ask questions during the interview - it shows that you are interested. I ask about opportunities for progression (I do not mention wages or holidays), what training is available etc. At the end of the interview, ask when they will be able to let you know if you have been successful.

Remember you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.

Surprisingly, I am not the most confident person although people reckon I am, I do a bit of voluntary work that gets me out of my shell and from that I am able to talk confidently (inside I am a jibbering wreck).

You know your stuff - smile, remember a firm handshake but not vice like or even limp (both are offputting). Go knock 'em dead. Good Luck.

If you are unlucky enough to get rejected - always, always ask for feedback so that you will know what to do when you have another interview.

I do have a problem with my confidence and sense of self esteem. Obviously not good traits for an employee to have and I am working on this - but am wondering if people have any tips on how to ¨fake it¨ doing interviews.

It probably helps to remember that this is not a "test" or an exam, it's a meeting, where both siides are working out if you are the the right fit for the job. They are keen to find the right person, and you are trying to fnd the right job, so treat is as a polite but formal chat.

Listen to precisely what they ask you, and answer the actual question concisely. Don't feel the need to ramble on, but also don't give one word answers.

Turn up on time, to the minute, which means being there and checking you've the right place well in advance, before finding a coffee shop a couple of minutes walk away and waiting to go back.

And dress appropriately, be polite, and let them see that you are the sort of person that they'd be happy spending ten hours per day with.

Do try and relax, interviewers realise its can be very daunting, but it can be very hard work when you have to drag the answers out of people.

Also remember its a two way conversation, all the interviewer really wants to know, is do you have the skills and experience to do the job?, will you fit the team? and will you stay/enjoy the role?
