Benefits in kind and bonuses - not many of those in the public sector!

Not many in the private sector either unless you count sales, managers, bankers etc.

...the company I am currently with offer a 10% pension scheme (i.e. I put in £100 and they put in £10) which seems pathetic to me. Do I have unrealistic expectations coming from the public sector?

Do you mean they will match just 10% of whatever your contribution is? I thought that the percentages banded about were of your total salary, not just of your contribution amount.

Leeds City Council just voted to retain their 65p a mile (yes!) allowance for driving a car with a > 1.2l engine.

Sounds like a pretty hefty benefit in kind to me.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

I know someone who worked in this place.

He said the carpet pile was so thick that if they dropped their rolxes, they'd struggle to find them again.

Yes as the Civil Service schemes are some of the best. Worth a lot on top of your gross income. Something which many totally underestimate the value of.
