These days most grandparents are still of working age, and this is only going to get worse as the state retirement age increases.Don't relatives and friends help out any more?
We're going to do 2 days/week for our grand daughter and her other grandparents are doing 2 days.
I realise some people don't have relatives but surely most do and some arrangement can be made?
Also, the population is now more mobile and many young professionals moved out of their home town years ago and so don't have family near by to impose on.0 -

did friends ever help out without pay?
if paid they would need to be qualified and vetted etc0 -
The real problem is Grand parents who want a life and a career themselves. How dare they?0

If they are deemed to have received "payment in kind" then they need to be qualified and vetted, e.g. if two people on a job share look after each other's kids while the other one is at work.did friends ever help out without pay?

I wouldn't trust my kids with my parents (or should that be the other way around?) so it is lucky they live far enough away that it isn't an issue.I think....0 -

My grandad used to take me on his motorbike when I was about 5 and he was looking after me
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
            Of course they did
I appreciate those in London/SE may find that an inconceivable prospect.
how when where did friends regularly look after other people's child for nothing?
few 'friends' just sit around all day with nothing else to do but look after other peoples kids from 8am to 6 pm
total fantasy
ps. I don't live in the SE0 -
