Going self employed after redundancy

Hi all my husband us getting made redundant and has decided to go self employed again (last time was 20+ years ago). Does he just phone the tax office and explain this is what he is doing? Is there anything he could be entitled to for setting up his business? Any help is appreciated. Many thanks

    Hi Sharktale,

I'd try googling Business Gateway. I'm sure there is advice on there on going self employed.

Just needs to phone HMRC and register for doing tax returns and dealing with NIC. Alternatively can fill in an online form.

Anything he's entitled to? Ermm, entitled to paying taxes? You really need to be clearer with your question

Have a look at this (just post 1). A whole section on registering for tax!

May be entitled to Working Tax Credits, which average c £55 per week for eg a single man over 25 working 30+ hours per week when self-employed.

You can check with HMRC if any Tax Rebate is due, next month.

It's relatively easy to register as Self Employed with HMRC online. You have to complete a Self Assessment tax return online, but eg for the tax year which begins in a month's time (2014/15) the online deadline isn't until 31 Jan 2016.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

Thanks all, just picking up this post instead of starting a new one. He's going to go to the tax office next week as now finished work. What I meant about being entitled to anything was whether there is any financial help with setting up.
    Thanks
