when mine broke a few years ago, (plastic again ) I was lucky enough to live near to an old fashioned ironmongers (now since sadly gone owing to the competion of the big B&Q etc)I took the lid into the shop and the man there kindly replaced it with a wooden one, know of the sort you get on drawers.Including the screw and his strong wrist to screw it in for me it cost me 50p:) and a big smile. Its so sad that the small businesses are gone.I am a great believer if I can of using a smaller local firm if possible. My local electical shop will happily sell you one electric light bulb for 60p rather than a box of 6 (which I don't need) for a fiver. So if possible and if you have a local small firm do try to use them if you can.

I've been told to get one, but the idea of leaving a slow cooker on all day terrifies me and I don't know why! I think I'm just worried something will happen and no one will know as my partner and I will both be at work. You could get one, and use it at the weekends as part of your batch cooking process, until you felt comfortable leaving it on all day while you were out.
That's what I generally do, not because I'm scared to leave it but because I don't need to as I'm around to cook in the daytime.
I use my slow cooker like a cheap to run saucepan that doesn't need watching to make sure it's still simmering nicely.
I never eat what's in the SC on the same day. I think casserole type food (chilli, Bolognese, curry) benefits from marinating. at least overnight.0
