Carpet smells after water spilt on it

A friend of mine was defrosting her freezer and didnt plan on the defrosting ice turned water spilling onto the carpet which now smells. I've found on the forums that bicarb of soda is meant to be good for the smell but is there anything else I can suggest she tries ?

    White vinegar.

Sounds like the water wasn't too clean lol white vinegar mixed with warm water 50/50 and dabbed over the area will clean and hopefully rid the smell

The smell could be from water that has taken a long time to dry, not necessarily 'dirty' water. When clothes dry very slowly (i.e. indoors) quite often you get an unpleasant, musty smell. You can get the same smell in carpets because the dense fibres dry v slowly.
Try the bicarb of soda sprinkled over the carpet dry. Leave overnight and then hoover up. The soda granules absorb the odour.

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on the carpet and hoover it up some time later. Longer the better I think.
