[TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] Door Store are messing me about. In November I ordered doors and handles to be told the doors wouldn't be available until mid Jan. So I took the handles away. Time passed and more time passed. Then last week (late Feb) they called saying the doors were finally ready. However my problem is that there's now a sale.

We were already given a discount on the doors so that's not the issue. The problem is we paid full whack for the handles and there's now 20% off all handles. The Door Store say they can't give us the sale discount now as we are FINALLY getting our doors and already own the handles. So I suggested taking the handles back, getting a refund and buying them back immediately at -20% sale price. And this is the good bit...!

Door Store say there is a 20% handling charge on refunding items! Has anyone else experienced this?

As you're not returning them under your statutory rights (i.e. as not fit for purpose, or faulty) they don't have to take them back at all. Anything they offer is according to their own policies rather than the law.

I know I have no legal rights returning items that are not faulty - that goes without saying. But I was wanting to know has anyone ever seen a refund handling charge before?

It may not be (strictly speaking) a handling charge for the refund. It would be more likely to be phrased as a stock/restocking handling charge.

I've certainly seen that levied on"returns" before.

Never had a returns handling fee myself, but have never asked for a refund or exchange 3 months after purchase unless item had a fault. Really don't see any issues with this charge.Sill

Sill, part of the issue is that it took 3 months for Door Store to supply the goods! I can't use the handles if there are no flaming doors.
  • Ask for a bit more discount as they delivered their doors 1 month late. A gesture of good will for late delivery. Worth a try, but do it with a smile and don't hope for much from them. I found them quite awkward to deal with....... Problem I think is people see the big red store and think they are like B&Q, who tend to just take anything back, but they aren't.

Did the Door Store advise you to buy the handles before you had the doors?.Sill
  • They are not cowboys.

You where prepared to pay for the handles @ that price in November.
Now they have a sale, and you want them to price match?

If the handles increased in price you wouldn't be complaining..

10 - 20% handling charge on returned items is fairly standard in the building merchant type businesses - I know I've paid a handling charge for returning things to Corry's and Bassets.
