gas/electricity bills

Hi all,

We have just moved to rented accommodation prior to declaring bankruptcy and voluntary surrendering our Old property and are setting up the gas and electric Bills.
However due to the winter months we are over 400 in debit, which wouldn't usually be a problem as when it comes to the summer months it would even itself out, but they are saying we have to pay up the old property in full before setting up the new property.

Now, we can't afford this, the questions are:
Can the debt be included in the bankruptcy?
Will we still be able to set up energy supplier in the new property even though we have outstanding debt with the old property?
Even though we owe them money can I still contact them asking them to disconnect the old property as we no longer live there?

Thanks in advance guys

  • Can the debt be included in the bankruptcy? - Yes
Will we still be able to set up energy supplier in the new property even though we have outstanding debt with the old property? Yes - in fact I stayed with the same one when I moved to the new property and they credited a DD I had paid the day after I went BR (the bank hadn't frozen the account at that point and there was enough cash in the account to pay it), once you are BR they are not allowed to collect the debt or keep any payment you made after the date/time of the BR.

Even though we owe them money can I still contact them asking them to disconnect the old property as we no longer live there?
I don't see why not but that's up to them I guess.
  • That's great, thanks for your reply!

...but remember, you are responsible for your bills from the date of your BR forward at both properties...only any amount owing prior to the date of BR is included in BR.
