Interview at Tesco's

Hi

I have just successfully got through the questionnaire assessment at Tesco and been invited for interview. I have a couple of questions which if anyone has been through the same assessment/interview could help me with as this will be the first interview I have had in over 25 years and during that time a have only had admin background!!

Firstly, I have been told that following 1-1 interview I will be assessed on the shop floor for about 20 minutes i.e. how well I interact with customers. Will I be on the till, tidying shelves mingling with customers making "small talk"?

Also no rate of pay was mentioned in the advert. Does anyone know if it's NMW or a bit higher?

Any advice would be most welcome as I have already mentioned this is my 1st interview in over 25 years and have extensive (40yrs) admin background.

  • Firstly the job pay will depend on the position you applied for, for ordinary shop floor / till type staff it used to be around £7.30 an hour but i left 3 years ago so it's probably gone up by now ;) I always found the pay to be very good.

You'll also qualify for a 10% discount card and a premium rate (I think it was reducing to time and a third) for Sundays and bank holidays.

I started working for Tesco 10 years ago but your time on the shop floor will be a hands on trial, so probably tidying or filling shelves. The interview will be a competency based situation so questions like tell me a time where you have done worked under pressure etc

when i had my interview with tesco i stood by the front door handing out baskets to those who wanted them

'hello, would you like a basket ?'

    if they say no thanks

    'have a good day !'

stuff like that, i wasnt on the tills i worked in fresh produce, it was my first job in retail and id never had a customer based job before, they just want to see how you interact with the general public, people you dont know, just be polite, cheerful and chatty ish

im extremely jealous, i left over ten years ago and wish i could go back to tesco, the pay was really good back then compared to other companies, best of luck, hope you get the job x

Thank you for your reply which has been extremely helpful especially with the shop floor part. I've also thought as they've said part of it is to see how I engage with customers I'll have a browse round the store memorising where everything is in case a customer asks where to find something whilst I'm tidying the shelves.

Thanks for your input bluebeary. This is also my first retail even though I'm 56 and previously worked in admin for 40 years. But I suppose I've acquired a lot of transferable skills during that time.
