Luxury Bread

Options
The last two times I have been to the farm shop where I get my meat, they have had delicious bread, very rustic looking cobs, simply wrapped in white tissue type paper and with hand written labels stating "Geoff the Chef's Bread" and the flavour. It comes in various flavours and I have tried the thyme and rosemary one and the red onion one, and must say that they are wonderful with a lovely home baked taste and texture.

Only thing is they are not cheap £1.60 for a small cob, though as they taste so good I don't really mind treating us to one.

Still I wondered if I couldn't do something similar for less. On my way home from shopping today stopped in a newly opened farm shop and purchased a 1.5kg bag of organic unbleached stoneground flour for £2.60. With this and ingredients I had around the house I have made:

1 thyme and rosemary cob (Herbs free from the garden)
1 Cheese, red onion and sage cob(a small red onion lurking in the veg basket, 2oz grated mature cheddar and sage free from garden)
1 Walnut cob(a small handful walnuts chopped from storecupboard)
1 Multi seed cob (Had a tablespoon of multi seed mix leftover)
2 Plain rustic cobs

In each case I just kneeded the additional ingredients in while shaping the cobs.

I reckon that even costing the yeast and extra bits and bobs in I have made 6 luxury cobs for less than £4, approx 67p per cob.

Just tasted a slice of the cheese, red onion and sage bread, warm from the oven and it's yummy!

:T This is precisely why I bake my own bread -it's not only a lot cheaper, you can produce the same high quality product like the one you describe. It's a win win situation ;) Try some cinnamon buns too. Simply roll out your dough into a rectangle, spread with soft butter, brown sugar and cinnimon. Roll up, slice and bake.

I was really lucky to find a copy of The Daily Telegraph recipe book 'Definitely Different' in a charity shop for 50p. I think its circa 1950's. In it was this recipe

    BROTHERLY LOVE

If you are making white bread you can use some of the dough after it has been proved, for Brotherly Love, a traditional Suffolk bread.
Roll out dough to a long strip, 1/2" thick, put on dabs of good cooking fat, and sprinkle with sugar to taste. Roll up, bake on a greased baking sheet for about 30 mins in a hot oven gas No 7 425 degF.
Quantities to 1lb of dough are about 1oz fat and 1 1/2oz sugar.
