I keep reading threads on here that don't make any sense to me. Can someone tell me - is it because some posts have been deleted or is there something wrong with the way threads are being displayed to me?

You are correct.
Lots of posts by a nasty user have been deleted by the forum admin, which means lots of threads look a bit confusing afterwards.
Don't worry the problem is not with you or anything your end.
