I'll have you know I am a very good shot, having been brought up in what some would call "the country" and having had grandparents and friends with guns around, it was considered a good idea to teach us kids how to use them. The first time I fired a shotgun was when I was about 5/6 (prone with it against my shoulder else I would have been knocked down!), and I had cousins with air rifles so we regularly practiced with those (tin cans). The first time I shot at an actual target was when we were on an activity weekend, again with an air rifle, and I shot the centre of the target out :D Never fired a magnum though, biggest I've fired apart from shotguns is a .22 rifle.

Most of use really appreciate the time and effort you invest in this thread redfox, we know that without you we would not be able to have what is normally a wonderful, chatty, homely thread as this. Thank you.:D

Happy birthday to the birthday girls, and to those that do not admit it :D And to anyone that just fancies another birthday :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I thought it might be useful to report back on my first week of trying to shop the Elite way. It’s been a rollercoaster week with many highs (in the form of Tosco PPs and Sada APGs) along with several lows (I messed up so many times it’s embarrassing)! It’s certainly been a steep learning curve – with a HUGE amount still to learn and I am indebted to all those who have posted deals and then patiently answered questions, reposted, explained again etc!
Here’s my first week’s diary:

Saturday 1st March: 1st attempt at shopping like the Elite - I started small in Toscos by doing a fairly normal shop with 3 x finest beefburgers and some Dr O pizzas (I removed anything on special offer and put these through separately in order to maximise the PP on the beefburgers). I got a £10.00 PP voucher on my first shop and a £6.12 PP on my second – Yippee!

Monday 3rd March – 2nd attempt at shopping like the Elite: I’m keen to stock up on the Finest Beefburgers! PP voucher for £6.09– thrilled ! More Finest beefburgers and a £6.13 PP voucher so far, so good and I’m very happy J

Tuesday 4th March – 1st shopping trip of the day and 3rd attempt at shopping like the Elite - Got a £6.63 PP voucher, mainly due to the BNI deal – I was hoping that I’d also get a DTD by using the Weetabix cereal and Kenco coffee label confusion (now expired) but managed to buy the wrong one as the Kellogs was part of the 3 for £6.00 (as PPs had kindly told me already) but I panicked in the shop and got it wrong, despite having it all printed out on my shopping list! This is proving more difficult and stressful than I thought! Even though I know I am not doing anything wrong, I feel guilty and keep thinking I will be ‘caught’!:o

Tuesday 4th March – 2nd shopping trip that day and 4th attempt at shopping like the Elite. I was increasingly determined to get the DTD on the cereal and coffee confusion (now expired) so I headed straight for the appropriate aisle. As I arrived, there was a very pretty woman (maybe she is an Elite member?) explaining to a very kindly and sympathetic CS that she had been overcharged as she should have got 3 for £6. The kindly CS agreed that the price labels were confusing and, apologising profusely, whisked the pretty woman off to give her a refund. I was elated to see it was working so this time I made sure I chose the right cereal and, sure enough, when I got to the till, the 3 for £6.00 discount did not appear. I also noticed that the Rowntrees Randoms I’d bought as fillers (which had a SEL of 20p so should have been a total of 60p) had gone through at 60p each with a 3for2 discount, so total of £1.20. I toddled off to the CS with high hopes and a thumping heart only to find the kindly CS had been replaced by the biggest trout known to man or beast!

I explained politely (if somewhat nervously) that I’d been overcharged on two items. She said she had to do one at a time and she would start with the Rowntrees Randoms. She studied my receipt and told me the discount had been applied as I had got 60p off. I explained again that I had still been charged £1.20 when the SEL said 20p each (x 3 = 60p). After what seemed like an age (and a march to look at the SEL) she told me they were the wrong product for the SEL (although they were lots still there). I calmly explained that the SEL stated Rowntrees Randoms 20p with the packets stating the same. She said grudgingly, “I’ll give you that one,” and led me back to her till where she gave me 60p and a free scowl. I said, (trying to appear simultaneously innocent and nonchalant) “Oh, I thought it was double the difference on overcharges.” If looks could kill, I would not be writing this now! Without saying another word, she handed over the remaining 60p and yet another free scowl.

I thanked her and explained again that I had also been overcharged on the coffee and cereals. With a prolonged sigh, she called another member of staff over to cover the till and faffed around for at least 5 minutes before going to the cereals aisle. On the way there, she told me that she doubted there would be a combined cereal and coffee offer as ‘they don’t go together’. Once I showed her there was actually just such an offer, she read all the SELs carefully and told me there were 2 different ‘3 for £6’ offers on the cereals which I couldn’t mix. I replied that the SELs were very misleading, especially as the ‘3 for £6’ yellow stickers were on 2 adjacent shelves and only by reading the tiny writing could anyone see they were different offers. She stood her ground and refused to refund the difference so I said I’d like a refund.

She led me back to her till and faffed around some more, until finally she handed over my refund with yet another free scowl. I thanked her and, shaking like a leaf on an adrenaline high (forgetting all the sage advice from the Elite to just keep a low profile and ring Toscas later), I told her I would be contacting Trading Standards as I felt this was misleading advertising (I genuinely believe this to be true and am sure that Toscos must have made a fortune out of people buying what they thought was a 3 for £6 deal but didn’t get it). She replied, “You can do that if you want although I doubt they will be interested because the labels are correct. You can speak to the Manager about it if you want.”

I agreed to speak to the manager and waited while she faffed around again before she called him... by this time it was more than half an hour since I’d first approached CS! Eventually the manager appeared and he was lovely. I showed him the 2 ‘3 for £6’ deals on adjacent shelves and he agreed it was misleading and that it was unreasonable to expect customers to read all the small print on SELs. He told me that Tosca’s chairman has stated he wants to listen to customers more and act on what they say so I suggested he could start by listening to me and giving me some recompense for the inordinate amount of time I had just wasted on all of this! The lovely manager took me back to CS and told a young man to issue me with a £5 card as a ‘goodwill gesture’. The trout’s face was a picture – I thought she was going to have a coronary! Goodness only knows what she’s have done if she knew that I’d already ‘earned a PP for £5.54 on the Finest burgers!
All, in all it was worth it but, to be honest I found it very nerve-wracking and stressful!

Tuesday 4th March – 3rd shop of the day (I’ve never done so many supermarket shops in one day in my life before); 5th attempt at shopping like the Elite and last ditch attempt to get the DTD on the cereal and coffee confusion (now expired). – It was late at night and I was shattered (having been to work and done 2 supermarket shops already) – after all that, I got confused and messed it up by choosing a cereal that was not included in the 3 for £6.00! However, all was not lost because I got a PP Voucher for £6.69 (due to BNI deal) and a very kind CS lady helped me to swap one of the cereals so that I could pay the 3 for £6.00 and refunded me the £2.17 difference. I hadn’t got the heart to tell her I didn’t really want them anymore!

Note to self – do not attempt to do Elite shopping when too tired or stressed!

5th March – needed a day off from shopping to recover from the above!
6th March: 1st shop of the day: started shopping for the ‘Big Night In’ curry deals. PP Voucher for £4.06 off next shop (would have been £7.52 if I hadn’t bought the reduced JF Frizzease – grrrr!).

Note to self – don’t get tempted by reduced items or special offers when trying to get a PP!

2nd shop of the day: shopped for another BNI plus the Finest meal deal wine glitch- PP Voucher for £8.00 off my next shop Plus got 20% off finest wines (£6.80 disounted)
3rd shop: (still in Toscos) more BNI deals and bought some JF shampoo and conditioner (I knew it would compare more favourably in SADAs but was desparate to get hold of some and hadn’t got time to go to SADAs which is considerably further away). Got a PP voucher for £9.21

7th March – having used and been very impressed by the JF shampoo and conditioner last night I was tempted to trek across town to SADAs. I amanged to do two JF shampoo/conditioner shops and netted the following APGs: £6.53, £5.73

8th March: still in SADAs – I divided my trolley into 3 sections and then put the sections through the till separately one after the other. I bought more JF shampoo and conditioner but then stupidly added in lots of biscuits forgetting that the shampoo was compared to Morries whereas the biscuits were comparing to Toscas. Ended up with lots of biscuits I didn’t really need at more than I wanted to pay although I still managed to get APGs for £8.62, £7.79 and £7.34 which sweetened the pill somewhat!

Notes to self:
1. Always remember which shop you are comparing to;
2. Try not to get carried away and mess up by attempting to get two different deals simultaneously;
3. Be cautious of doing 3 shops in one trolley because if I mess up it will be mess up times 3!

As you can see, I made lots of mistakes. However, I learned a great deal and have so far got lots of lovely things plus PPs and APGs for a total of ..... drum roll please................... £117.48
Thank you all so much :beer:
