Help! 'lost' photos on digital camera

Hi guys, my daughter is in Thailand at the moment - 6 weeks into her backpacking - and has a problem with her digital camera. She tried to download photos in an internet cafe and it didn't work - she assumed it was a software problem with the computer in the cafe.. She has sent me this ..

"When I turned my camera on to take a picture the screen showed "write
protect" with the xd logo above - when I switched the dial to show the
photos I have taken it said that I have no pictures om there. I've
managed to take off the write protect by going to:

My computer - removal disk - clicking properies on the DCIM file - then
looking to see if there are any hidden files. This has enabled me to
now take photos.

However, I still don't know where my other photos have gone. I took a
photo and it showed p as the first photo on the card but when you click on
properties it says that the card contains 421 files - which would be
about the right amount of photos I have taken. But when you click the DCIM
file nothing is in it."

Any ideas of how she can retrieve these?
