Your son is living with a scumbag.

The question to ask is "how long until he rips off my son?"

I disagree, we base things that happen on how society views them. In a nutshell *most* people would consider stealing £5 off a friend/relative to be the scum off the earth - but if say for example banks slipped up leaving you £2000 better off and you keep your mouth shut - most people wouldn't say HOW COULD YOU RIP OF THE BANK??

The reply would be...what if they find out? Or wish that would happen to me.
People don't know what they want until you show them.

As above, I think that this view suggests that you maybe have a different perspective than some other people would. I'd hope and expect that none of my friends would react as you suggest.

Fortunately, it seems more and more apparent to me that what I was told as a child is actually true. Cheats don't tend to prosper. Morals such as you think that most people have tend to lead to a poor life.

If cheats didn't prosper, then bankers and politicians would be paupers....

    But, they are not.

I disagree with you but think you're missing the point of the post you quote.

The type of oerson who actively evades repaying debt isn't going to be averse to tapping up mates for money a nd not paying back, so it's a risk for teh OPs son, and I'd avoid this guy if I could.

In your example it sounds like you've received a payment in error from a bank, a little different from borrowing money and then running away to not pay back. In your example I'd query it with the bank, if they didn't correct it I couldn't force them to pay it back but would keep it available for six years in case they came back.

The most probable cause of receiving unexpected money into a. Bank account is that some poor soul has incorrectly typed in an account number, you've received their money, and it seems you'd do your utmost to keep it. The bank ain't losing this money it's just some poor sod who unfortunately mistyped your account number rather than their own, hope this doesn't happen to you as karma would suggest you don't get it back.
  • For the OP:

I went bankrupt in 1991. In 2006 or 2007 I had a letter from a debt collector saying they had bought my debt from a bank and pay up. I'll also say I'm not one to put my actual details on the internet, don't use FarceBook or similar.

Firstly the debt was in the BK, so no hope, but my life had changed completely. I had moved home many times to completely different areas, been divorced, changed banks 3 times and so forth. How they found me? No idea.

They'll find him, sooner or later.
I am not offering advice, at most I describe what I've experienced. My advice is always the same; Talk to a professional face to face.

Debt - None of any type: Bank or any other accounts? - None: Anything in my name? No. Am I being buried in my wife's name... probably

My son has recently moved to a house share, whereas before he was in a bedsit.

Him and another bedsit tenant now house share.

My son has just been told by this guy that he took a £750 loan out with wonga on 31/1/14 and needs to be repaid by 3/3/14 (£968)

He now says he has not got the money to pay but since he took the loan out at the old address they will not find him.

He has also swapped banks since the monies were transferred.

However much everyone hates wonga - surely this is the reason why they have to charge such high rates.

I also do not understand why they would give him such an amount since he is on DSS and has been since sep 2013.

How long will it take wonga to find him?

    Hi,

The guy who your son has moved in with is a thief. Plain and simple, a thief and if I was your son then I'd be locking up all of my possessions...

It's not like he has taken any sort of action to rectify his position (payment plan, DMP, etc) instead he chose to run away knowing fine well that what he is doing is wrong!

I know he will say 'Pah! it's a scummy PDL they deserve what they get...' they loaned him money in good faith and has now, ironically become the scum!

What happens in 6 months time when he can't afford the rent, borrows from your son and can't borrow from anywhere else? He'll do a runner and rip off your son as well...

If he's left any forwarding address or had his bank account transferred then there's a reasonable chance that Wonga or a collection agency will catch up with him. I'm sure they have a whole host of dubious tricks.

The only way he can be sure it won't come back and bite him is to pay it off, but he sounds pretty irresponsible so probably not the best person to share a flat with (what happens if he moves out overnight whilst owing money towards rent or bills?). He's already had to be bailed out and evaded a debt, so what's to prevent him doing so again.

Presumably, you could speed up the finding process, by contacting Wonga and giving them his address?

Sorry, for Gawd's sake don't tell your Son if you give up the address!
