Newbie - Boosting income advice

Hi all
I am a long time lurker, first time poster. Had my LBM around November '13 when I realised that I had maxed my credit card/overdraft and was going to run out of money half way through the month. Took my head out the sand, started internet banking, and not looked back since.
However since great initial progress I am finding now that my debt clearing is moving too slowly. It's weirdly addictive. I have sold just about everything I don't need, reduced my outgoings to the essentials (ish, there are still weekends where I look back and think whyyyy), and signed up to every money saving card (i.e. Nectar) that I can.
What I need now is a way to boost my income. I have a good office job that takes up the working week, I wouldn't be able to work evenings. I do not currently work at the weekend. My question is, does anyone know how to go about finding a job that is one shift a week? As I'm sure everyone here knows, an extra £50 can go a long way. I would be more interested in working at an actual job than spending time on the internet filling out surveys. Tried this, spent a lot of Christmas on Swagbucks, but the reward really didn't match the hours necessary.
Typing 'weekend work london' into Google or Gumtree doesn't really help. Had a quick scan of local shops but found nothing. I am not fussy, could do warehouse/bar/office work as required. Looked into dog walking but think there's a lot of people wanting to do that on the weekend!
Any help greatly appreciated

Hi OP,
You are taxed at 25% of a second job earnings, so you would have to work around 10-11 hours at minimum wage to get 50 quid.
Have you contacted local hotels/venues - you could waitress at functions, bar staff at pubs/clubs.
Can you not ask your boss for a pay rise? It is usually the easiest way to raise more income.0 -
Tax due is calculated on your total taxable income whether that be from one two or any number of jobs, there is no special second job tax rate. This means that without knowing the current income there is no way of telling what the tax will be on the second job, but provided that total income does not take the OP into the 40% tax band then tax on the second job will be 20%. Also worth remembering that provided the second job has no connection with the first job then you get a second NI allowance so no NI until earnings go over £153 a week (2014/15 figure a bit lower until 5 April)DomRavioli wrote: »Hi OP,

Hi Purseyval
Thanks for posting, and well done on taking the first steps in the right direction! I hope you've checked out the Debt Free Wannabe board - lots of lovely people over there in the same boat with lots of support on clearing debts.
As for finding a part-time job... I think the best thing to do would be to approach companies personally - drop into shops, cafes, bars etc. with a CV and/or speak to the manager to see if they need any extra staff. Face-to-face interaction always leaves a better impression than sending a generic email or mailing, especially if its independent businesses you're approaching.
I daresay that living in London you'll have an abundance of little cafes/bars/shops etc. nearby, so just pop in with a handful of CVs and try your luck.. certainly nothing to lose! Good luck
