any debts accrued through the relationship have no bearing on child support, child support is a separate issue (as far as im led to beleive), my brother was in a similar situation, basically from anothers perspective, my brother was in long term relationship 16 yrs, 2 children, he worked just handed his wages over every month, he thought things were getting paid, they wernt, he didnt know this until a few months after they split, she sent all debt letters to him, he had to pay it all (she even hid the fact she hadnt paid council tax for 2 yrs), at present he is paying all debts, even a washing machine that he thought he'd paid out right for, Plus CSA, he's a gentle soul (more fool him) and he's left paying the lot.
So sorry for him. its so difficult, usually men considered to be bad when relationship ends and they try to reduce maintenance payments fairly. But I hear off so many stories now when it is completely opposite..... and usually dads in circumstances like that care more about children.

Thank you so much for replying. I just wanted to check where he stands. There are rules but you would also find out the most from experiences. Even it is not good news, at least he can get prepared.

    thank you :-)

This is simply not true. Certain debts can be considered under the Variation scheme. They have to be in the firm of a loan - not a credit card/overdraft debt and the PWC/QC has to benefit from the debt. It is quite complicated but under limited circumstances some credit for the debt repayments can be made.
  • Crellow ,although we believed the debts fitted the criteria( not even counting any cdedit card debt) & we enclosed what we considered proof they refused to count them in my husbands situation. Case is still ongoing but current liability to the children through the CSA has come to an end now. We are still waiting on the outcome of the supposed arrears but if we keep on paying as they want, the case will be paid and closed before any positive outcome. What can we do now ?
I am saying this as people maybe interested and the original poster might get something useful from it .
