Student Loan Deferment HELP: Pre-1998

My partner has 3 student loans from 95, 96 and 97 which he has always been able to defer as he has never earned enough gross income. I normally help him with the deferment, sending off three payslips showing his income.

This year is a bit trickier, however. He took voluntary redundancy at the end of March 2013, receiving a small payout. In July, he started a low paid, temporary job for a couple of months. He has a p45 from them. Since then, I have been supporting him (mortgage is in my name only, most other bills apart from council tax). He is looking for paid employment while at the same time trying to become self-employed. He has registered with the tax office but has not earned enough as yet to pay tax. From September, he did claim Job Seeker's Allowance but had to sign off when he was offered self-employed work. This was complicated so he decided not to make a further claim.

My question is what should we send as proof of income? I thought bank statements with a covering letter explaining the situation. If he ticks the box for self-employed, he does not have any paperwork to send as it is all so new. He does not have an accountant and has not had any grants. I suppose, at the moment, I am indirectly supporting him so I could put his only income as Financial Support received from a third party, e.g partner but I'm not sure how to evidence this as I pay everything out of my bank account which is not joint.

Anyone have any experience of this?

My partner is 48 so is not far off from having the debt cancelled.:rotfl:

    I phoned them a few years ago with some of the things you mention - getting redundancy payout, followed by a temporary job before not working again and they told me to complete the boxes that applied to me and provide what evidence I could. I also sent a covering letter explaining it all and they simply sent me a deferral letter as normal and I had no further questions to answer. I have never completed the 'financial support received by you from a third party' box as my husband doesn't directly give me any money - he just pays the mortgage etc from his account. The only other thing I do do is complete the other means of support boxes with annual figures and write 'annually' in the column box that asks for weekly, fortnightly etc. I feel that gives them a better picture of my whole small amount of income as it is not the same each month. They have never questioned that either. I have photocopied the evidence I collect for the last 3 months incomes and post that with my deferral request.

    I have also gone self-employed this year for the first time and have no accountant. I plan on photocopying my business bank statements for the last 3 months to show them my income and as above calculate my total income since I went self-employed last July and put the figure in a box somewhere and say it is annual income.
