Cheap fruit trees (aldi & lidl)

Today at Wells Lidl I purchased a Peach tree (about 3' tall) - 2 days ago at Bridgwater Aldi I purchased 1 Jonagold Apple tree and 1 Culinary Cherry tree (I didn't want the Morello Cherry).
All are priced at £3.99 each - the Aldi ones are bigger (6'?) and sturdier.:j

Just a word of caution, I have had a 'so-called' fruiting cherry tree bought from Lidl in my garden for 8 years and it has yet to produce a single fruit

Not that I don't like the tree, I have it in a good position and it is a good shape, it was also a gift so no outlay from me but still....no fruit

That's probably because most of the varieties they are selling are not self pollinating and need other select fruit trees to pollinate them in order to get fruit, I've found that on the label they say what other ones to buy in order to get them to pollinate.

I've bought a few and had good results, so worth a try at the price

Although I no longer have the label to compare the variety, it did say that it was self-pollinating.
I wish that I had the room for another tree or could even persuade a nieghbour to plant one but sadly not to be.
Like i said, I am happy enough with the tree but fruit would have been a bonus.

Useful to know but after more than a decade trying to get plants to thrive in my barren back garden I have finally accepted that I couldn't give a petal the home it deserves, let alone a bush or a tree. And no room in the front

Aw. Have you really tried everything? HOw about growing in big pots? Figs thrive in them! We had no soil at our old house and grew everything in pots.

ANyway, thanks OP. We can't squeeze much more in tree-wise, but will keep an eye out for any fruit canes they might get in...had better results from Lidl ones than our pricey ones from Victoriana Nurseries!

anyone who is sceptical about the quality of these and wether they fruit I have about 40 plus of these trees from both lidl and aldi brought over the last 14 years as have always wanted an orchard but could not afford one, and they are brilliant we have trees at 15 ft plus tall giving so much fruit that we make jam fill the freezer eat lots and give lots away, the kids love picking their own fruit, we even have peaches that are sweet and juicey. so give it a go ,

On the trees, I picked up two pear trees from Lidl today: A Williams and Santa Maria variety (small stuck on label near top of box).
Google tells me that the Santa Maria is self-pollinating so will fruit fine once established, however the Williams is self-sterile meaning that it needs a pollinating partner (ie conference pear tree or other) in order for it to fruit (and is sadly incompatible with the Santa Maria)

Just to clarify why some are saying these tree don't fruit or do fruit. Depends on the variety (and the Lidl boxes didn't specify whether self-pollinating or self-sterile)

Although it may be self pollinating, some fruit trees benefit from a partner tree nearby (whether this is some kind of moral support group thing, psychologist trees )
Apparently self-pollinators will sometimes not go until there is a partner planted nearby, best to add another one.

i would not buy fruit tree's from Lidl again. I bought from their 3 or 4 years ago, i was supposed to get a greengage and a victoria plum but now that they have established themselves and started bearing fruit well they are not what they are supposed to be.
The so called victoria is more like a president plum while the greengage produces small sweet purple fruit so i guess buyer beware.

This week i planted 3 apples tree's from scotplantsdirect.co.uk yes you pay a wee bit more but they are bigger and i hope i got what i paid for

I would be very happy with that! Presidents are my favourites, just a pity they are in season for all of 3 weeks towards the end of the summer.
