Going alone- How difficult is it.Step Change - direct debt problems/cancelled my dpm.

Im at the point were im thinking it would be easier to go alone and arrange my own DMP.

Since the start of the year Step Change has been difficult to work with. I ran through a new budget at the start of the year and added debt to the plan (I know I wasnt ment to take out more debt- but I did)

Everything sorted! No Step Change cancelled the DD three days after setting it up. They have denyed this, even though I have the DD history from the Bank.

They then failed to add a debt on, claiming that I was to inform them when I had moved bank accounts (which I did when I set up the new DD)

Now they have cancelled the DMP! I could scream.

So should I continue with Step Change (I know they have done some great work and helped me out, but Im at the point of screeming) or do I go alone (so to speak)

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete

  • I'm not trying to have a go at you, but in adding debt to the plan, you broke the terms of the agreement and Stepchange were entirely within their rights to cancel the plan with you - it is about working together!

If you have already prepared a budget and know all the figures, you can write to each of your creditors yourself, and make the offers of repayment. Set up standing orders for all of them, to make sure you don't miss anything.

It's up to you. If you think you can handle it alone, do it alone. If you would prefer to have a DMP managed by someone, then try the other free services. Don't pay for it, obviously, but try Payplan. Just remember that if you break the terms of the agreement again, they might cancel it too.

I wish you the best of luck

Do it on your own its quite simple - or take a look at the NEDCAB website for their online plan - they basically provide calculators/ template letters etc so you can do it all yourself. Very comprehensive and easy to use (well I can manage it so it must be ok...)

On another note sometimes adding credit to an existing DMP has to be done - need to keep/ get a car on the road to stay in work or something similar etc. Don't beat yourself up about it - put yourself in control then you're in the driving seat.

    good luck with it :)

    Hi catandy

Thank you for the positive feedback on our system.

For others interested, we have recently made a few improvements to the site and the DMP can now be found at http://nedcab.cabmoney.org.uk/dmp.asp which includes an option to transfer from an existing DMP to the CABmoney self-help system.

Any feedback on the above would be appreciated.

The cost of returning to the cold UK, having been away for nearly three years, just became too much for us. After Christmas I did a review of the budget with them, they were fine, accepted the extra debt and I thought we were going in the right direction.

The first I knew was that the DD returned unpaid. The bank confirmed Step Change cancelled it. I paid the first payments direct, but as there was no cash for step change their computer automatically cancelled the new DPM. Which is strange because I missed a payment in Nov and it didn't cancel then!

Anyways, I have now agreed terms with all but two debtors, using the level of payments that step change had suggested. These two have asked me to email them info and an offer. So I
