Bl00dy hell!!!

New house - chimney blocked by birds nest - called out sweep yesterday and after an hour he declared all clear.

Fast forward to tonight and watching TV with fire lit a bloody great flaming lump of twigs falls down chimney, explodes into pieces in the hearth and lands all over carpet melting through in about a dozen places.

Added to this it's a rental and I'm only in the house a week and the living room carpet is a total mess.

Any suggestions on recourse from the sweep? Ask for a refund? Anything more?

Your insurance should cover you for this. However I would initially talk to sweep regarding his incompetemt job. Also check does he have insurance you could claim from.

An insurance claim is something I would prefer to avoid if at all possible. I would imagine the sweep has some form of PI cover. Fingers crossed...

Sounds like twigs maybe lodged on a shelf within the chimney which is sometimes how they are built, impossible for the sweep to tell without inspection cameras.

who paid for the chimney sweep ,you or the LL .
did you get a bird cage/cover to stop the birds going back
Can the sweep say the twig wasnt there last week as you didnt get a cover on the chimney.
you should have used a fire guard .

Chimney swept Wednesday. Fire lit Thursday. It was debris from the original nest. And I paid for it not LL.

  • Did LL know you were having it done? did they approve?
If LL was not told and you went off and had it done, it'll be up to you to sort out either way. Good luck in getting the Sweep to compensate you for it.
If LL approved then at very least they should help in any rectification.. just my views
  • If it is a sweep from this association you may be covered.
