Raw Cashews on a budget?

Options
I am trying to find an inexpensive source of raw cashews to make cashew milk.

I am going vegan for a month (to start off with, I am hoping it will be a permanent lifestyle change) and do not want to buy commercial cashew milk, especially as it seems to be very easy to make it at home.

Thanks for any help!

All nuts (except peanuts) seem expensive here. When we went on holiday to Turkey, they were dirt cheap! Cashews, pistachios, even macadamias. We literally got a small carrier bag full for a few pounds. They even had shovels to dish out a sackful if you wanted them. Not sure if you can bring them back to the U.K though.

Well done on going vegan though. Your health, and the planet will be much better off for it.

I would try a wholesalers if you are going to be buying in bulk - otherwise a market stall or grocer/greengrocer that sells loose nuts - you may be able to negotiate a good price if the stallholder/shopowner knows you are going to buy a certain amount regularly.
  • ethnic supermarkets, particularly Turkish ones, can be cheaper
  • Cheapest place around here are 1) the spice stall on our local market 2) a small ethnic store (I think it's run by Iranians) where they sell all types of grains and pulses from huge sacks at wholesale prices. As an example, I was able to get 2.5kg of dried borlotti beans for £1.20 last week....

The other ethic stores (run mainly around here by Poles and Chinese) are also pretty cheap and the quality is excellent.

Do you have anything similar in your neck of the woods?

I will see what our market has to offer on Saturday.

There are a fair amount of Eastern European shops here. I've never thought of looking for nuts, but will take a peek. There is also a brand new Asian shop, so will give that a go as well.

    Thanks again! :)
