    My mum had to have anti - D injections with her pregnancies and she says she was told when we were rhesus negative after we were born. She can't remember exactly but thinks all but one of us is rhesus negative. Maybe she's wrong about my dad's blood type.

    I too had to have anti-D injections but that is because I am -ve, my child has +ve blood group so it can't be assumed that, because she needed anti-D, you and your sibs have -ve blood.

    Knowing your blood group won't help in an emergency. They aren't going to ask you what group you are!

    They can cross match very quickly these days.

    Is the right answer.

    According to this if there is a parent +ve and a parent -ve then the offspring will be +ve.

    Wrong!

    Two negative parents : negative child
    2 positive parents or one positive and one negative then the child can be positive or negative .

    You need 2 markers - one from each parent + is dominant so someone who is +- will still be positive:

    options in kids with the following parents

    ++ / ++ kids = ++
    -- / -- Kids = --
    +-/+- kids = +- or ++ or -- (ie 2 positive parents can have a negative child)

    I was thinking of adding my blood group to my medic alert bracelet to help out the medical staff but I guess it's not necessary. It just seems like such a simple thing but it is impossible to find out without spending a lot. I hear a lot about these home testing kits being unreliable but it seems the only way to do it.
  • I agree with Flugelhorn.

    In my family situation we have the following

    I am A pos. my husband is O neg.

    First child (son) is A neg.

    Second child (daughter) is A pos.
  • I'm A- my husband B+

    2 of my kids are A-, 2 B+

    All 4 of my kids were born in Asia where the rheasus - blood group is even rarer than it is here, but even the hospitals there were fully stocked and prepared should I or babies have needed a transfusion, thankfully none of us ever did.

    It suprises me its expensive to find out your blood group here. In Asia you do get tested fairly regularly for tropical diseases etc. and every place automatically issued you a card to carry identifying your blood type at no extra cost - I ended up with 4 or 5 of them!
    No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

    I'm not able to donate blood. I'm sure in an emergency they'd try to check first but I know rhesus negative is rare so they may not have enough. I'm also just really curious which is why I was thinking of these kits.

    I'm O neg, I didnt find this out until I went to donate blood. I was quite a late starter - my mum always told me that since we lived in a country in the 80's which had a high risk of tropical diseases, I would never be able to donate.

    My friend persuaded me to at least go in for a test and I've found out since then that I am able to donate.
  • In all honesty i think you are wasting your money on one of these kits and you have no idea how reliable they are.

    In an emergency you will be given the Universal Blood 0 -ve.

    In the event of a pregnancy and you are concerned that you may need Anti-d injections then they would test your blood type.

    Your Gp is right in the sense that they dont know your type as the tests you are having would only be looking at a specific thing, rather than your blood group.
