Bank Account with cheque book

Hi All
I was discharged from my bankruptcy in November 2009 after being declared bankrupt in May 2009.
Since then i havent had any credit apart from my O2 mobile contract which i have had since 2004, and also managed to secure my car insurance monthly back in 2012.
The question im asking is, would it be worth my while trying to open a new bank account with a cheque book facility. Not too bothered about a overdraft. Or would i have a better chance asking my current bank to let me open an account with a cheque book?
The reason being there are occasion when i need to use a cheque to pay for items.
Has anyone had any luck in getting a bank account with cheque book 5 years after being discharged.
Thanks

Hi chadman2006, have you cleaned up your credit files?
Have a look here if not -- > Credit Reference File Clean Up Post Bankruptcy
Some posters have and some couldn't get a full account until after the six years are up, it's often hit and miss unfortunately.
Best wishes
