It sounds a lot, just for labour, and you have the cost of fabric and pattern on top, so you could be looking at maybe eighty quid or more?
However, how long will it take to make? If four hours, then that's fifteen quid an hour. Six hours would be a tenner an hour. Depends on whether you personally would do a job like that for that sort of wage. You could, as already suggested, sew it yourself, but I can understand if you don't want to because whilst I would love to make all my own stuff, I don't have the patience or the ability so would be totally useless at it.

Written down it does look a lot just for a skirt. I would love to be able to make my own clothes but i haven't got crafty hands i can sew a button that's about it! If i could make my own i would make everything well dresses and skirts.

Not sure if this is allowed but can anyone recommend someone?;)

I reckon to make a skirt like that, including prewashing and ironing fabric, cutting out pattern and fabric pieces, and putting it together, finished to a professional standard would take a long day - perhaps up to 10 hours or so. So you are being quoted less than minimum wage. You also need to take into account the cost of the notions - thread, button, zip, interfacing etc, which will all add up too.

So I think it's a fair deal. Any less than that, and either it will need to be rushed/not finished properly, or the person doing it will be doing it for love rather than a fair payment.

It seems a lot of money, as shop bought items are churned out in sweatshops, and hence we are used to buying them so cheaply. But this should be a quality item that isn't comparable to the clothes you could pick up on the high street - it would be like comparing a homemade lasagne made with fresh ingredients and steak mince to a value ready meal lasagne (speaking in the language of old stylers!)
  • you just have to laugh. So many people think that crafting an item for someone else should be done at a slave labour rate. £60 is a very fair rate and to make a skirt properly would take a good day plus the time spent in pre washing, ironing and laying out and measuring prior to cutting. I make well finished garments for myself and family, seams are all finished and zips lie flat and very neatly.

Good grief if it was so easy to do then why don`t you do it yourself op? No way would I subsidise a skirt like this. I would be charging £10 an hour for 10 hours so £100, I value my skills btw

As i said i can't sew/make clothes. I never said anything about having it done at a slave labour rate i was merely asking was it too much as i did not know what the going rate was.

I did have a handmade skirt before from ebay which i paid about £17 for so when i was quoted £60 that's why it seemed a lot

  • No, it doesn't sound like a lot to me. I could probably make a three or four-gore skirt quite easily but it's the fiddly bits like setting in the waist-band and the zip which takes real skill to do properly.

That hand-made skirt on ebay was a steal and didn't represent the true cost of making it. The £17 probably didn't cover the cost of the fabric alone.
  • My guess would be what puts the price right up is hemming the full circle skirt bottom seam. That's what took me the better part of a day last full circle skirt I made.
(Then got too plump for, so it became two specacular short cloaks for the lads.)
  • For me, even factoring in costs such as wear and tear to the machine, time, needles, thread, other incidentals etc it would still feel expensive and I would struggle to justify that.

It does depend on how much there is to do which are the little niceties - is it really just the fact that you want it cut out and stitched together or are you providing measurements for personalisations etc
