Protective covering for outdoor gym

We have outdoor gym equipment in our local park, unfortunately installed on grass rather than Tarmac. . This winter it has become virtually unusable because the grass has been churned into a sea of mud through constant rain and people moving regularly from one piece of equipment to a other. Can anybody suggest an inexpensive but permanent cover we could use for the area, preferably with a transparent type roof, which we could suggest our local council installs to make the equipment useable all year round.

  • A cover will be vulnerable to wind and vandalism damage.

The area underneath the equipment should be dug out and filled with something like rubber chips, either loose or bonded

Thank you for that. The ground area has already been laid with a protective gridded plastic matting through which grass was sown, but the area now receives a lot of use and wet weather just churns the surface into mud. The thought was that a protective overhead covering of some kind would prevent the mud.
