Lavender oil OR lavender-based oil - VFM & in BULK - where best to buy?

Options
I am looking for lavender oil - OR a lavender-scented oil - that is VFM. And sold in a large/bulk quantity.

I have a lovely bolster cushion containing dried soft lavender.

Sadly the cushion cover has got dirty, so - as there is no inter-lining - I have had to remove the dried lavender while I ran the cover thru the washing machine! Now the cover is all dried & good as new :), I need to re-stuff the bolster cushion with the lavender; but - over the course of time - the lavender has, needless to say, lost much of its scent.

So this is the time to refresh the fragrance. However, a "few drops" of lavender refresher oil will NOT be sufficient for such a large cushion!! ;)

The cushion is c. 14in long x c. 6in diameter. So that's a lot of lavender!! Hence I need a good quantity of lavender-scented oil/liquid with which to "drench" the dried lavender cushion filling.

However, lavender fragrance refresher oil (500ml) costs £17.50 at eBay.

And PURE (i.e. "essential") lavender oil costs a fortune - see e.g. at eBay where 500ml costs £23.99!!

It doesn't help that I don't know exactly how much oil I will need! So I might have to buy more after an initial purchase . . .

So can anyone recommend, as an alternative to "essential" oil, a cheaper product to buy? - one that will still work as a fragrancer & at the same time NOT contaminate the dried lavender.

 Or is there a good online stockist, that can be recommended, of lavender-scented oil? (A stockist of a better-VFM product than the 1&only!! stockist of "refresher" oil that I found at eBay; that was too costly at £17.50.)

I had thought of perhaps using "bath oil" that is just scented with essential lavender oil, but am not sure this will be strong enough + might?! even make the dried lavender filling go mouldy over time . . . :undecided

I'd rather not buy fresh lavender as new pillow-stuffing, as I fancy enjoying that I've saved some moolah! :T & will have recycled something & created something a little arts-&-crafts'y !

I'd appreciate any ideas!! :) re both a good product &/or VFM stockists.

  • I wouldn't have thought that you would need anywhere near 500ml of oil. One 10ml bottle of lavender oil goes a long way so using just one small bottle should get you a really strong scent. You can get a 10ml bottle for only £1.19 plus 45p postage on Ebay.

Exactly what lindadykes says. I buy all my essential oils on ebay - only go for one with 100% positive feedback. You should easily get 10ml for under £2 and that will be more than enough :)

Tip - when you get the oil, add it to the lavender and then seal it in a bag/tin/something reasonably air tight and leave it for a few days for the scent to fully get into the lavender. (I make wheat bags and we find that it makes the fragrance last much longer)

If you used that, you probably wouldn't be able to stay in the house, it would smell so strongly!

Personally, I'd replace the lavender - that will give a longer lasting scent.

Any oils or fragrances you use will need to be constantly topped up.
  • I have a 50ml bottle and have had it for a good couple of years and put it on my feet most nights. NO way do you need 500ml although £23.99 for such a large amount of essential oil is excellent value.

Replace the lavender, adding oil will make grease spots come through.
  • Many thanks for all the advice. MOST useful.

BTW, I wasn't planning on using all 500ml with just this filling ;) ; I was bearing in mind that buying in bulk & saving to use in the future is always cheaper i.e. in the long run a larger quantity (as long as I keep the lid on tightly to keep the fragrance in!) would save me some "dosh-er-oo"! :money:

Will keep forum updated re how the refresh turns out.

    :)
