Bankruptcy and future mortgage?

It's been a long time since I last posted but everyone was so helpful I was hoping to get some advice again.

I returned to University last year and will be graduating June 2015, as I am a bit of a planner I have already set up an on-line savings account to hopefully get some pennies behind me for when this time comes.

I would really love to be in an improved situation and maybe start looking at the possibility of a mortgage - although this maybe a very long shot it's good to plan and still get to get myself in an improved position.

Some background.....I was discharged from bankruptcy May 2011, after this time I discovered I had a CCJ still active on my credit file, even though the debt was included in y bankruptcy, I got a certificate of satisfaction issued and this is dated as satisfied Oct 2012. I still have 2 defaults showing on my credit file (Vanquis and Quickquid) as they refuse to mark these as satisfied within my bankruptcy but no payments or contact has been exchanged since June 2010.

I really want to try and improve my credit rating as well as saving for a deposit. A few months ago I applied for a vanquis card and I think it was an Aqua card - I was refused, is this because I am now a student - even though I am also working part time, or perhaps because they were one of my creditors? Capital one has previously refused me and I am cautious of applying for too much and being refused all the time - any advice? Do prepaid credit cards improve your credit rating?

I have an O2 contract mobile that is up to date and I have been on the electoral roll now since August 2011 at the same address (my mums) as in term time I live away but all post etc still goes there.

How have people manages to get credit, cards/catalogues etc....is it because of my student status now? Im in my 30's now so it's time to start forward planning!

Any help or advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks
