    622 is the internal size. Mostly these types of tyres are referred to as 700c (don't ask, just don't!)

    So your 37-622 would normally be written 700x37c (again don't ask!)

    The 37 just refers to the width of the tyre in mm. So this one is 37mm across.

    Because the tyre curves around (rather than being flat like a car tyre) you can fit different sizes to the same rim.

    So if your original was 700x37c you could probably go down to 700x28c or even up to like 700x45c. Although 700x35c is a common size for hybrids.
