5 year old party ideas

Options
Hi all hoping for some ideas.

Im going to hire a hall for dd2s party in july. Entertainers are so expensive. Any ideas for activities. Was going to usual pass the parcel and musical statues. Any other nuggets of inspiration?

  • Simple craft activities - potato prints or toothbrush spatter paintings if you have tables there. Or do you have any friends who can do face painting? Or Simon Says game.

If you can borrow a bubble machine that's usually quite fun - providing there are mats, can get rather slippy otherwise.

for my daughters party I got some cardboard crowns with stickers and plastic gems (I used the sticky dots on the back instead of glue). They all sat down to decorate their crowns to wear before eating the party food, it was good thing to calm them down before eating and they all enjoyed it. I got them online but I think you can also get tiaras!

At another party a mum had taken some pictures, cut them into large pieces to make a jigsaw and then hidden the pieces - children worked in groups to find their pieces and who finished first won.

Dice game - areas of the room are assigned the numbers off a dice. Children pick a number and go to that area. You roll the dice and what ever number it is those children are out of the game. You can also do this with colours - I just used a bag with blocks made out of lego in red, blue, yellow and green). If the green block is pulled out, children in the green corner are out.

    Hope you have great time!

Get someone to draw a jokey donkey and make a tail out of dark wool then attach a bit of blue tac to the tail. Blindfold a child. Then you have pin the tail on the donkey.

Oranges and lemons. Two adults one is the orange, one is the lemon, hold hands and make an arch. The children run through and all sing:

Oranges and lemons say the bells of St Clemens,
I owe you five farthings say the bells of St Martins.
When will you pay me say the bells of Old Bailey
When I am rich, say the bells of Shorditch

Then adults start to move arms up and down singing:

Here comes the chopper to chop of your head, chop chop chop
and capture a child between their arms.

You ask the child if they want to be orange or lemon (they have to whisper) then go behind that named adult.

When all have been `captured` you have a tug of war to see who wins - the oranges or lemons

Musical chairs, one chair less than the number of children. Stop the music and they scramble for a chair and one will be out. Take a chair away and carry on until there is a winner

What's the time Mr Wolf one child is wolf facing the wall the others shout `what's the time Mr Wolf` and he may say `3 o'clock' and they have to walk 3 steps towards him. This is repeated him/her saying a time. After a while Mr Wolf will suddenly say `dinner time` and turn and run to catch one of the children then that child becomes Mr Wolf

Hunt an object, hide a toy and get them to find it.

    The Farmer wants a wife
Children form a circle round one child in the middle a farmer. All sing `the farmer wants a wife, the farmer wants a wife, he ho daddy oh, the farmer wants wife.

The farmer then chooses a wife. All sing `the wife wants a child etc. etc.

Wife chooses child. All sing `the child wants a dog etc.

    Child chooses dog.

Finally everyone sing ` we all pat the dog etc. and the dog gets a pat from everyone.
  • Pinterest is amazing for party game ideas...my son had pass the parcel, musical statues, hula challenge, beanbag on head races, burried treasure and a pinyata (that we made from a box) at his last party, and the year before we also pinned a basket onto a baseball cap and children threw ping pong balls and tried to catch them in it...hilarious! Treasure hunts outside are always popular too. At our easter hunt we hid eggs and gave pairs of children their own unique maps to follow around the garden...it held their attention for ages and each 'set' of eggs had letters on and they had to build an animal name from them. All children found 5 eggs...kitten, donkey piglet, gerbil...and I remember the others! :)
  • Some great ideas thank you! Forgot all about oranges n lemons! Takes me back!! Writing all these down! Thank you!

When I ran a Beaver pack, they loved playing "Mummies" when we had parties. Get the group into pairs and give each pair a loo roll. They then have to turn the other person into a Mummy. Just make sure you have a black bag ready for the rubbish :j
  • For you ds's 4th party my OH had the idea of completely lining the party/dining table with cheap lining paper and giving each child a pack of crayons (wilkinsons have some at 17p a pack) AT&T heir place setting. not only does it keep the children relatively focused and quiet whilst they're eating, but it saves on having to buy lots of tabled decorations as you need the table quite clear to make space to draw on, but the crayons can be kept as part of their party bag at the end. Failing that, any old school parlour games are fantastic.

Rather than hand out party bags, get one of the grown ups (older man) to dress up like a pirate and pretend to be asleep slumped by the door with a bottle of rum snoring loudly, party bags/small gifts for children gathered in his arms etc...

Then as they leave tell each child to tip toe up and take a present very quietly....they all have great fun running away squealing with their party bag as he splutters and snores and nearly wakes up....
