I recently took a good look at our memory foam mattress in proper daylight and was horrified at the state of it. Anyone any ideas about cleaning it? would Vanish be a good idea? I'm worried about damaging the foam because the (non-removable) cover is pretty thin and is already starting to give a bit around the stitches.
We have people coming to stay when we're on holiday and no doubt they will want to change the bedclothes at some stage so just covering it up isn't an option. Also it's one of those things that once you've noticed it, it's very hard to 'un-see' again.
Any help gratefully received.

You should be safe using a foaming upholstry cleaner, either the type that comes in an aerosol can designed for car upholstry. Or you could use a carpet shampooer.
Make sure you hoover the mattress to remove any residue afterwards.
Don't use a solvent cleaner.
It's allways a good idea to get a mattress protector for any expensive mattress.0 -
Thanks Tim, I'd given up on an answer on this
Will try the foaming upholstery cleaner.
Can you recommend any cover that won't add to the heat problem? I tried a feather topper but DH hated it.0 -
My foam mattress topper came with a thick towling sheet instead of a cover - much easier to take off and clean - I've given mine a good hoover but nothing more yet....I was wondering if I shoved it over the washing line and steam cleaned it??"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. A feather topper will only make you hotter. You would be best using just a breathable terry topper.
There are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:
1) some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.
2)mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.
Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.
