Credit I didn't ask for...

I've just been turned down for a mortgage (95% LTV) based on my credit score. This came as a surprise since last time I checked my score was excellent. Basically, last year I purchased a few small items from the website of a high street store. Entered my card details and assumed that was it. I then went off on holiday. Anyway, weeks later as I was sorting through mail, I came across an unexpected bill from this store charging for the items I assumed I'd already paid for. I paid the same day but by this point, bill number 2 had already been dispatched + a late payment fee.

At the time, I got the fees waivered without any hassle and thought nothing of it - we're talking about a bill for around £20. However, I've now realised that I have two missed payments that have drastically altered my credit rating. I don't think I'm going to find anyone who will offer me a mortgage - which I have to sort out asap. Even if I can raise my deposit to 10% which is a remote possibility with family help, as these late payments were so recent I think it's looking pretty bleak unless anyone has any suggestions??

In the long term - is there anything I can do? I really feel like this should be removed from my history but as I technically did miss the payments I'm not sure this will be possible. I'm so annoyed that what I thought was a simple online payment has gone so wrong.

  • Are you sure these late payments are the only barrier to you getting a mortgage?
  • I can't be 100% sure but there's nothing else showing up on my credit report that might cause concern. Prior to this I had high credit score according to Equifax. Even if this is not the sole reason - it certainly doesn't help.

Have you checked your Experian and Call credit reports? Maybe something on one of these?

  • Yes - I've checked. There's nothing else.

How long have you lived at your current address? Been on the electoral roll at that address the full time?

    Any other loans/debts?

Earnings and amount applied for? Joint application?

  • As I said, everything else is all fine! My mortgage advisor went through bank statements, affordability and my credit history statements. I've been at my address for 7 years and have been on the electoral role for the whole time.

These very recent missed payments have pulled my whole score down and I feel like this is unfair since I didn't ask for or want credit in this instance. I can probably repair my score over the next 6 months but that's far from ideal.
