The enduring legacy of pioneering independent filmmaker John Cassavetes was as strong at the time of his death in 1989 as it was when his career began in the late 1950s.
Favouring characterisation over plot, mood over structured dialogue, dramatic immediacy over technical polish, Cassavetes set out to create cinema centred on the actors which he did brilliantly with a fine body of work that includes such classics as ‘shadows’ ‘Opening Night’ and ‘A Woman Under The Influence’.
Cassavetes has been frequently described as a genius and a visionary, but the accolade he most richly deserved was surely that of ‘father of independent film’.
