Bankruptcy on Credit History

My bankruptcy ended in 2011 but I know it stays on your credit history for 6 years. So in theory it should be gone by 2016. Is that normally the case though? Does it always come off your credit history after that time? So if I wanted to get on the property ladder in 2016 will it still cause me problems?

Thanks.

  • Yes it will come off your file in 2016, six years after your BR, the only thing to remeber on the Mortage question to which you will still have to answer yes to is "Have you ever been decalred bankrupt"

    Marti,

You should check your file as they may be records that are put on post BR, but in order to get a mortgage in 2016 you should have completed the credit clean up and be building as much positive history as possible. However, you should check your report as if you have moved a number of times without applying for credit you may well have a new credit file, but this still needs building in order to get a mortgage.

The other poster is quite correct you should answer honestly the "have you ever been made bankrupt" question honestly, if you don't it's fraud and that is never a good thing. Brokers in my experience are the best bet for helping you find a mortgage.

The only other thing to look out for is the solicitor bankruptcy search this is on the land registry information and lasts 5 years so this won't be a problem in 2016.

I wish you good luck in obtaining a mortgage post BR, hopefully you'll post a success story back on the board even if it is 2016.
