Is there anywhere to advertise a job, either on MSE or elsewhere?

I work for a startup company and thus money is tight and recruiters are expensive (£10,000 fee?!). We're looking to hire a software developer (so they should be savvy enough to be online and lurking on the internet), but we're struggling to find places to advertise or look that can expose us to developers that want a job.
Does anyone know any good places to advertise? We have an ad on gumtree and have tried approaching local developer groups but they don't seem to have forums/websites where we can reach all of the members.
I don't want to advertise here because it probably breaks the terms and agreements so I am just looking for some advice of where I might try.
If this is the wrong forum or inappropriate I apologise.
Thanks

Why not look at Job Boards like Monster et al and start there?
I don't know which Recruiter you've spoken to but I don't think the fees are anywhere near that high - I believe it's in the low-thousands range, paid after the candidates been there a few months.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Software/IT is a network based recruitment environment spread the work through the people you know.
LinkedIn is becoming a requirement for anyone in IT.
As above most will look on the big job web sites if looking.0 -
I'd agree with using LinkedIn - try your own network and you could also offer a bounty to your current employees if they find someone for you.
I get most of my contract work either from agencies I've worked with before or on Jobserve - I don't bother with any of the other job boards.
You could also try places like Freelancer.com - although you won't get an employee, they do allow you to advertise for fulltime work, so you may find a freelancer
who is willing to take the work on on that basis.0 -
The recruiters we spoke to definitely wanted in the region of £10k
Will definitely try networking on linkedin, thanks for the suggestion.0 -
I know it's probably not the best place but there are a lot of local job sites on Facebook.0

You don't need a recruiter for that kind of job if you have a bit of time - you might need some help to sift through applications.
If you have a company website then post the job there making sure you mention the required technologies etc. Then link to it through Linked In and Twitter, and ask on the post for Shares and RTs. My two most recent appointments came that way. They weren't techie roles but I'd imagine the reach is greater amongst techies. I did use print media and job boards but the successful candidates didn't come that route.
For the record, an agency will charge !2-15% for this kind of role. (maybe more for specialist platforms or skills)0 -
Unless the role is £100k+ that fee sounds like a total rip off.
As per the above: 10-15% of the annual salary is the usual fee for recruitment.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Whereabouts in the country are you?0

Have you got any universities locally? Many have job postings for final year students (mine was called Graduate Jobs South) which will probably be cheaper, or maybe contacting the universities direct?
LinkedIn is brilliant for jobs, I know two people who've recently got a job through there.0 -
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I live in Bristol. We've popped it onto gumtree but will investigate facebook, twitter etc.0
