Slow cooking in the oven?

I am asking the question as I work shifts and it would be nice to get home to a freshly cooked casserole on a cold evening but I am reluctant to splash out on a slow cooker if I can use my gas oven. What sort of temperature should I use and would it be safe to leave the oven on for over eight hours? I have a variety of pyrex and a nice new cast iron pot. Would the cost of the gas be probihitive?
Thank you for any advice.

I often casserole cheap cuts for six or eight hours or even overnight. and gone out and left it to itself. I figure that if its perfectly happy the hundreds of times I have been there - it should come to no harm if I am not! as for the bills - the oven should be on very low anyway.0
