Can I negotiate my notice period? How?

I need to hand my notice in. I have a one month notice period, and if I give my notice in today, it'll expire on 11th March.
Pay day for both jobs is the 1st of the month.
Ideally, I'd like to give three weeks' notice, rather than a month, and start the new job on 1st.
I'm already signed off with stress, due to what could be conceived as bullying by my manager and general discrimination, so I won't be going back. I'm signed off for three weeks (two have gone) at the moment, and I'll be signed off for the other two that will take me up to my finish date. I can't go back, the behaviour is that bad. I'm a wreck. I also have a few days holiday booked in this period.
I'm not sure how to hand my notice in - on the phone, in a meeting, in an email? Or how to ask to finish early. It'd mean one week's less sick pay for them.
Any advice?

No if you hand in a months notice today it will allow you to leave on the 11th March not the 8th.
Are they paying you full pay? We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yeah, I realised that I had the dates wrong as soon as I posted. I thought it was the 8th!
Yes, I'm on full pay.0 -
Just hand in your notice now and start the next job whenever you want.
If you cannot go back then don't...let them try and chase you for any compensation they may be entitled to. They may win though so be prepared for that.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Then its in their best interest maybe to let you leave earlier but if you resign giving a months notice and they say you can officially leave now they still have to pay you for the notice if it says a month in your contract.Yeah, I realised that I had the dates wrong as soon as I posted. just put it in your resignation letter that you'd rather that your employment terminates on X date and given that you are highly unlikely to return before such date that you hope that this will be agreeable to them0

I dont follow.
If you are signed off "sick" by a GP how could you possibly expect to start a new job ?0 -
don't hint you want to finish earlier than your notice they won't have to pay it.
make sure your fit note says you are only unfit to work at the current employer.0 -
What has happened with previous employees who resign - are they put on gardening leave?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

My sick note clearly states that it is this job, and a particular manager, who have pushed me towards a nervous breakdown. There's just no way that I could go back. I would, if I could. I hate being off. I feel like a big let down.
Previous employees have been poorly treated, and made to take their holiday.
I can't work out how much pay I'll be due, or what holiday I have left.
I'm sad, tonight. I didn't imagine that it'd finish like this.0 -
just because ur sick note states this doesn't actually make it proof, your Doctor is only hearing one side to a story. My sick note clearly states that it is this job, and a particular manager, who have pushed me towards a nervous breakdown. Regardless, the employer if they had any sense considering u are being paid full pay should accept a shorter notice as it simply will save them money.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0
