Mortgage refused due to names not matching

I am an IT contractor on very good money. I went through a broker and applied for a mortgage with Halifax as it seems they were the only ones to consider contractors with less than a years experience.

I got accepted for 2,83,000 (AIP). I then had an offer on a property accepted and went with a full application. It was refused. The broker asked me to get my Experian report to see what was wrong.

Property value £1,49,000. My deposit £35,000
Loan amount required £1,14,000

As it turned out my rating was 980 and no defaults only one late payment in the last 6 years. So they spoke to Halifax and Halifax said they are not sure why my application was refused.

In to further digging now my broker says when the AIP was made the name that was put in the application is in a different order to the name in the passport, hence the application was refused.

Now she is saying let us put the name correctly and re apply. Surely the broker should have filled in the form correctly as I clearly stated my surname, middle name and 1st name when I gave them my details

I am not sure what will happen now. I have also since spoken to Halifax and they don't seem to have my full mortgage application on the system and won't speak to me about my application. They have asked me to contact my broker who in reality is a numpty.

Any suggestion will be much appreciated.

Bit hard calling your broker a numpty for mis-spelling your surname. The same term could be applied to your inaccurate use of the comma, as most of the figures you supplied are pure rubbish.

Just ask broker to re-submit with correct name.

Especially when you consider IT consultants are frequent offenders when it comes to spelling and your post contains errors in the figures.

The broker will correct the issue and deal with it.

  • Perhaps the OP is used to using Lakhs.

100,000 in the Indian numbering system is written as 1,00,000

Which is very confusing to those used to the comma every 1000.
  • Sorry for being rude. I was upset. She got my name in the wrong order hence the application failed and she could not tell me why. The flat I wanted to buy is off the market now due to the rejected application.

She now says they will make the application and it will surely be refused and then she says we will have to appeal the decision? That for me does not make sense.

Not sure if I am being a numpty myself, I guess I am
  • You are right. Thanks
