Recommend a Friend Schemes - Worthwhile?

Does anyone subscribe to 'recommend a friend' schemes? Do you consider them a worthwhile way to get a bit more money?
A company I know started a referral scheme last year and are looking to see if they can improve it. They offer money and experience vouchers as rewards for every person referred that buys (they offer design and marketing services). January's reward was £100 per successful referral and they have also offered hotel stays in the UK.
Would this kind of reward be enough for you to recommend them if you encountered someone after online marketing, either in person or in a post on the Internet? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
