Maybe try cooking something on the hob (it's perfect weather for a casserole!) and if that turns out nice you'll know that you can still cook up a storm and the oven's at fault!

Condolences on the demise of your FIL.

Get yourself something like one of these

Keep a written record of what the oven is doing; you'll then see if it's consistently out by a similar amount all the time, or if it's all over the place; if the problem is consistent, you'll probably be able to adjust what you set it to and manage ok; if it's all over the place, hubby really needs to bite the bullet and let you get a new oven.

Personally I'd get the proper piece of kit rather than use a jam thermometer; they look like totally different animals to me (but I'm open to correction on this);)
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • No, those are exactly what I was talking about Lamewolf. They've saved me much heartache, constantly moving to new rental properties and trying to guess what the oven was like! I don't think I'd use a jam thermometer, I'm not sure it is rated to go that high and it would be hard to see it in the back of a hot oven anyway!
